Ohhh, the woods are absolutely magical right now!  Here's a little bit about what the Fox Walkers have been up to over the past couple of weeks:

With their Owl Eyes, the Fox Walkers have been. . . seeing plants like Stinging Nettles, Skunk Cabbage, and itty bitty Big Leaf Maple seedlings sprouting up all over. . .noticing Indian Plum leaves getting bigger every day. . . watching Chickadees excavating a nest. . . and witnessing Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese flying north. . .

Week 5 | Fox Walkers at Whatcom | Sunshine and Yellow Jackets

We had and extra exciting week at Whatcom Falls this week which included most of the group being bitten and stung by an ornery hive of ground-nesting yellow jackets! 

The day started off magically enough — after getting completely drenched for most of the week, we were granted with a reprieve! It was a beautiful sunny morning made all the more beautiful by the autumn colors and the water beading off of the moss and leaves.  We had our morning routine which included examining a beautiful Varied Thrush (Ixoreus naevius) which had been blown off course and into our house during the storm and playing an extremely fun game of Fox and Rabbits.

Week 2 | Fox Walkers at Whatcom | Sunshine, Owl Eyes and Cattail Magic!

Sunshine was abundant last Friday as we gathered with our Fox Walkers class at Whatcom Falls Park.  The large Big Leaf Maple that we generally meet under in the morning provided us with abundant entertainment in the form of fallen leaves.  We spent a good amount of time gathering the leaves and creating the biggest leaf pile ever, jumping in the pile, and playing an epic game of "Leaf Monster"!
