Fire Keepers | Weeks 22 + 23 | Remember Winter? Here comes Spring!

Wow. So would you believe me after all this sunshine if I told is snowed at Fire Keepers two weeks ago? I was there and just looked at the pics and I can still hardly believe it!

What a magical couple of weeks we have had on program.  Two weeks ago, it was a extra cold morning and after playing a high-paced game of Coyote and Badger, we went on a huge adventure to keep our body heat cranked up! It was awesome — we went further then ever before and discover some really neat little nooks, including “Grass Island”, only accessible by walking a log across a frozen waterway.  We found sign of Beaver and Deer amongst Willow and Red-Osier Dogwood that seemed quite ready to shake off the winter.

Fire Keepers | Weeks 20 + 21 | Forest Parkour and Fire

We had a super fun few weeks at Fire Keepers... this included new games, forest parkour, lots of fire , popcorn cooked over flames and more.  We received some good lessons about getting wet on a sunny, cold winter day. The kids helped make a special fire to warm up and dry out the friend who slipped and got soaked.  We found Owl Pellets and Coyote Scat and listened to the Barred Owls establishing their mating territory.   With Spring around the corner who knows what Forest Magic waits in hiding for us to discover?!?!

Fire Keepers | Weeks 16 + 17 | Faerie Fire Success and Special Guest Skills

The quiet winter days sure have been busy around here, so I will provide you with just a quick recap of the last two weeks and some awesome pics!   After our learning experiences trying to make faerie fires the week before, the Fire Keepers came back determined to give it another go! With the help of pitch and cedar bark tinder bundles, we had some great success this time! Then last week, Melissa was out and we were lucky to have Rourke McDermott, founder of Earth Living Skills School and father of one of our Fox Walkers, as a special guest instructor! Rourke is a wealth of knowledge and skills and brought not only great energy and a listening ear, but a host of projects to work on and a genuine excitement to share!
