Ohhh, the woods are absolutely magical right now!  Here's a little bit about what the Fox Walkers have been up to over the past couple of weeks:

With their Owl Eyes, the Fox Walkers have been. . . seeing plants like Stinging Nettles, Skunk Cabbage, and itty bitty Big Leaf Maple seedlings sprouting up all over. . .noticing Indian Plum leaves getting bigger every day. . . watching Chickadees excavating a nest. . . and witnessing Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese flying north. . .

Fire Keepers | Weeks 24 + 25 | Whittling, Bird Language & Amphibian Eggs

Wow, spring is here and it feels soooooo good!  We’ve been loving all of the sights, scents & sounds of this season right now, and we’ve been keeping busy at Fire Keepers over the past couple of weeks! We’ve done a little bit of exploring of an important awareness skill known as bird language, which refers to the vocalizations, behaviors, and body language that birds use to communicate with one another. One of our favorite ways that Pat and I like to teach bird language is by putting on dramatic skits in which we shape-shift into birds and act out their five main voices: song, companion call, territorial aggression, juvenile begging and alarm. . .

Fire Keepers | Week 5 | Salamander Meander

Wednesday was another high-energy day with the Fire Keepers!  Our focus for the day was on Amphibian identification.  This is the perfect time of year to look for amphibians and their egg masses!

We began our morning with a game of Fire in the Forest, and the animals we chose were of local amphibian varieties, including Pacific Chorus Frog, Northwestern Salamander, and Rough-Skinned Newt! 

After games, Patrick shared an epic story about our friend Marco (aka Moon Bird) and the time he went hunting for invasive bullfrogs in a swamp with his friends.  He made a special spear for the hunt, and used his fox feet to sneak up real close to the frogs at night. . .
