Faerie Fire!

Faerie Fire!

The quiet winter days sure have been busy around here, so I will provide you with just a quick recap of the last two weeks and some awesome pics!   After our learning experiences trying to make faerie fires the week before, the Fire Keepers came back determined to give it another go! With the help of pitch and cedar bark tinder bundles, we had some great success this time! Then last week, Melissa was out and we were lucky to have Rourke McDermott, founder of Earth Living Skills School and father of one of our Fox Walkers, as a special guest instructor! Rourke is a wealth of knowledge and skills and brought not only great energy and a listening ear, but a host of projects to work on and a genuine excitement to share!

Highlights included working on Cedar Bark cordage using different methods, splitting an White Oak log into bow staves using nothing but Wood wedges and a wood mallet, twisting up a bow string using soaked rawhide, examining the difference between Elk and Deer antlers, hosting a cedar bark tinder bundle scraping completion, transforming into Knotweed Ninjas, exploring a freshly fallen giant Douglas Fir, climbing trees, sliding down giant wet bark slides, carving wet wood to reveal dry inside, using the rasp/file to work wood, learning how to break wood without a saw, a visit by some Velociraptors and so much more!!!

Some favorite games included, Rabid Badger, Toe Tag, Wolf Ball, Fire Keeper and Renegade.

Oh yeah — and as we were finishing our time at Vine Maple Village last week, we heard two Barred Owls calling from either side of the forest … The Fire Keepers were able to stalk and find one of those beautiful owls and then had a really peaceful sit spot watching it.  So grateful for these awesome kids and the beautiful creatures in the forests that we get to frequent!

See you tomorrow and bundle up — its gonna be COLD!
